NONOS - Mercedes & Franziska Welte

Biography
Mercedes and Franziska Welte have been deeply influenced by art, music, and dance since they were little. Their (Tribal Art) African art that the father brought with him from Nigeria and their mother's varied inventiveness both had an impact on the two. As a result, a career in the arts was predetermined for them.

The sisters spent at least 15 years apart, during which time they each independently created their own paintings, photography, lino printing, and other artworks. The artists combined their two talents and sought a name that accurately described their collaborative work. They chose the moniker NONOS. Even today, the origin of this name remains a tightly guarded mystery. The first project that Franziska and Mercedes completed together was processing the events in the form of images. Currently, they are displayed in the Klosterneuburg Abbey Museum.

In 2018, one of their artworks was successfully acquired by a museum, which held the artists’ exhibition. After this, the sisters created a lighting display for the Leopold Hall at Klosterneuburg Abbey, and in 2019 they were exhibited at the Venice Biennale in the Palazzo Mora and the Giardini Della Marinaressa. Since then, Mercedes and Franziska Welte have been exhibiting and working in the stunning Wellenstein home in Lochau on Lake Constance, which they call the "Castle" in a friendly manner.
